• I was in Duncan again this weekend. I have to stop doing this: I have things I should be doing here, instead. Next weekend I will probably stay put? Who knows. That’s so far away from now.

Mum and I visited a gallery in Cedar on Saturday. It was delightful and full of purchase-able trinkets, which I did do (purchase things). There was also a garden and I liked it all.

I also read my first Hermann Hesse this weekend. I think it went well. Not a big story, but written well, and about a painter with much description of that process, so that was handy and made me feel better. A little bit of a thinky book, less than emotional (despite the content) but I liked the thinky (i.e. I tried to stop reading it but then decided I would rather continue to enjoy more of the layers and such). It also wasn’t very long. It was “Rosshalde”.

I also cut beans for bean soup. Cutting beans for soup is different than cutting them for canning. They are cut on an angle, and at about half the length as for canning. This means that it takes a long time to cut them. I was rewarded, however, with a trip to Superstore (for pasta) and WalMart (for a new winter duvet and cover). I was also rewarded with bean soup, made by Mum.

  • This past Saturday was spent in Honeymoon Bay. It was the same, only with meat jerky. Also this is the first time I’ve ever had a bathing suit cover for pre-swim times.

I think my painting might be working now. Right now it’s called “I forgot that the blue was meant to remain pure.” Or “I forgot that the blue was meant to remain blue”. As I have painted over all of the blue.

Yesterday, which was Sunday, I woke up at 4am. As this is a stupid time to start the day I tried to sleep. Failing that, I tried to read myself back to sleep. Failing that I got up and had spaghetti dinner, as I was hungry. Then my day had to start, of course. I cleaned the bathroom, as it was getting to be 6 or 6:30 by this time. Then I waited around for 8am to come so I could do my laundry (the laundry room in my building doesn’t open until then). Then, laundry done around 10, I waited around some more for some particular stores to open so I could purchase manga. (I think I was watching Doctor Whos while I waited.) None of the stores had the manga I wanted. I bought groceries instead and came home and ordered manga with the help of Internet. I made pizza dough, and then pizza. I read this month’s Walrus. I waited around for the SYTYCD finale rerun to start (again: i missed the first rebroadcast) and then watched that (I missed the first hour on Thurs when it was originally on). I ate corn flakes. I watched The Simpsons. I realized I was feeling too smart or impatient to watch TV. I decided my day was going on waaaaaaaaaaaaay too long. I thought about doing Sudoku puzzles.

  • I hope it really is a day off today because I’m so not prepared to go anywhere. Except maybe dollar giant.

I mailed some letters yesterday and since it’s a long weekend and no pick up until Tuesday, I am imagining my letters all alone in the mailbox still, waiting.

The book I am reading now is “The Gargoyle” by Andrew Davidson. All the reviews I have read of this book said it is good, and I concur.

I would like to note that this will be my first use of the word “concur” having only recently fully believed that it means “agree.” I first heard it used by Taylor at Camosun. He said “I concur,” and I was like “Oh good… Wait… does “concur” mean “agree?”” Apparently, it does.

I fixed my fan yesterday. At first I thought I could just “hammer” out the solution, but in the end I went to Home Hardware and purchased nuts. I fastened these the the screws in the base of the fan, and now my fan remains upright indefinitely. Opposed to before yesterday, where it would stand for a while and then decide to lie down.

P.s. My goddam awesome new phone isn’t connecting so I can’t goddam change my facebook status on it. This isn’t a problem as I am not actually anywhere away from my home computer, right? But I want it to work since yesterday I finally switched off my mum’s plan and have to pay for the GD thing on my own now. POOP in a HAT.

  • I
just read a book called “Mean Boy” but I don’t know how the dude in it was mean or anything. It was about poets and going to university to be a poet. I got bored in the middle, because I guess poets are boring? But anyway I got through it mostly because it was prettily written and I like to read that kind of thing.

It’s been so sunny out, and therefore, also In, that I haven’t had my computer on for fear that its innards will melt. For also that it is too hot to sit at it to do anything. Therefore just leave it off, right? Whatever.

I’ve been saying the words “good” and “lord” with different inflections, making my attitude toward things vary.

  • I went to Duncan this weekend. Officially it was because I heard that there was ballet class on Thursday night, which I attended. However, I also took the opportunity to have a visit with Amber (with wine in my parent’s backyard) and also with Naomi (with mojitos in Nanaimo). I took the train from Duncan to Nanaimo and back again on Saturday, which made for a nice day trip. Naomi showed me around her new ‘hood, which is actually my parents’ old hood: when I told them where Naomi lived they conjured up memories of walking to school, where Dad used to live, and Uncle Alec’s house on Third (or Fourth) Street. It was sooo hot but I wore my hat and sunscreen. I also bought some trinkets! I bought them at the first two stores Naomi took me too, and she was sure I was going to buy the city out, but I bought nothing else after that.

I also helped Mum with several projects: I set up her new cell phone (which is a lot like her old cell phone only with a camera) and printed envelopes for the dance school’s newsletter. I also figured out how NOT to have her cell phone on speakerphone, so I’m pretty helpful.

I got home to find a tag on my door that indicated that MY new cell phone is ready to be delivered at some point when I am at home to receive it. I’M READY NOW!

Mum and Dad drove me home today and took brother Jordan and I to early dinner/late lunch. We have decided to go see Star Trek at the IMAX on Tuesday. I’m a Big Fan of IMAX films. The only problem is going to be getting tickets (ahead of time) where Jordan wants to go after work tomorrow but I want to go home right away to collect my new phone.

Mum brought some flowers for me and set them up in vases around my house. I have put the littler of the bouquets by my computer here and I am smelling roses. I have also fresh blueberries, zucchinis, cucumbers, beans, dill, parsley, and plums. The plums are significant as I MISSED THEM COMPLETELY last year. Mum and Dad came down in August last and said to me “the plums are all gone.” This year, I have many plums to consume, and I shall become sick of eating them, as is the proper summertime ritual!

It’s soooo hot. Since getting home I have mostly just lay on my bed with my fan directed on to me, or sat in my chair with the fan directed on me. Eating plums. So decadent.

Oh. At ballet class, Pam is trying to get her students nice and flexible and so is having them put their feet up on the bar (one at a time) in a nice stretch. Having not had a class in 1.5 months, I thought to myself “No way. You can’t make me.” But I did anyway, and I was sore. But not too bad now.

I’ve brought back with me all my HYD books to read. Summertime reading! I’ve also been requesting things like mad from the library, and half of them have come ready all at the same time. Summertime is for reading! (Now that I’m not in school, anyway. When I was in school, summertime was for TV and sewing!)

  • Ok so I was lying in a sunbeam, but the breeze was chilly, so I put a blanket over my legs. Then I napped. And when I woke up I had the markings from the crocheted blanket burnt on to my legs. I’m going to put this post in the “clever” category.

  • I haven’t posted for a while. This was because for a week my computer was broken. Then after I got it fixed I didn’t really have anything to say. I’ve been going to work then coming home and reading books or watching TV. Now you are caught up.

The books I have read include: Julian Comstock, which was good, a bunch of HYD, also good. Now I’m reading Beautiful Losers by Leonard Cohen, which maybe isn’t as good as it is wordy and thoughtful. I have a gift certificate from Russell Books that I got as a going away gift from work, but I went in and there are no books I need at the moment. Come to think of it I’m not sure if I remember where this gift certificate has gone to now. I’ll have to find it and put it in a safe place. Or at least somewhere I can find it again.

I’ve spent a lot of time researching a new cellphone for myself. I’ve made my decision now, and I don’t know if it’s the best of decisions, but it’s been made so I can stop thinking about it now. I had the option to get a new phone now and stay with my current provider, or wait until my current contract ran out and switch to a new provider. Then I had to choose a phone, then I had to choose a plan. Arg. I got my mum to phone up the current provider (I’m still on her plan) to see if I could get a deal, and that’s what I’m now going with, but I’m still a bit wary. I’m sure it will be OK, though and I get a new phone, which I am excited about.

This weekend I have realized that there was a Doc. Who special I missed, and a Torchwood miniseries to watch.

On Thurs I bought some coconut milk ice cream to try out. It was pretty good. I got it in cookie-dough flavour, which was good, but too rich for me, I think. It’s pretty pricey, but there are a bunch of new flavours.

  • New job is pretty great! It’s all file boxes and documents and relevancy and classification.

I did have a moment of panic (7 minutes of panic actually) after lunch, worrying about how I don’t know anyone, and I don’t know my way around the huge office, compared to LCLB. Change is hard. But then my supervisor handed me a procedures manual and I’m pretty excited with what I get to to, so I think I’ll be fine.

The people are nice, just as I said. And they have continued to be nice, even though I work for them now, so that wasn’t just a show for my benefit at the interview. My supervisor is capable and nice. There are also 2 clerks who are also nice and know more that I do (for now!) and have already joked with me a little, so I’ll probably fit in OK.

I have an hour for lunch, and when (if?) my flex days are approved I’ll work 8-4:30.

I also have a security pass to get in the building. Ooooooooooh. Modern times. With my picture on it and everything. I feel like a real Government employee now (not really).

My desk is part of a cubicle “Pod” that I share with the 2 clerks. It’s a bit weird because I can sort of hear everything going on in other cubicles, but my podmates are pretty quiet (so far) and we’ll all be working on the same stuff anyway, so it’s probably a good set up.

  • Today I found a sunbeam and had a nap.

Today I bought a book and started reading it.

I’m kindof tired. In a while I will be able to see fireworks from my window. I’m not sure if I’ll make it or if having a nap pretty late in the day is going to keep me awake. I guess being nervous about starting job tomorrow might keep me awake, too, but I’m not feeling that quite yet, which is good. I finally got the letter I was supposed to get for me to sign and formally accept the job, but it was in the regular mail so I just got it yesterday. I signed it and faxed it from Staples today. This letter calls me Assistant Supervisor. which sounds quite posh. Although the secret is that I’m assistant supervisor over 2 clerks who will be gone at the end of the summer, but I don’t have to tell people that.

I think the heat really affects my appetite. I’m eating 25% less. I know this because there keeps being a quarter of my food left when I become full. This is most obvious with my quarter of mini-pizza in the fridge right now. Tomorrow for lunch I’m going to go to Subway. This had been a semi-plan, but now that it’s late and I have nothing actually prepared, it will be what happens.

The book I bought is “Julian Comstock: Something-something-22nd Century” It’s good so far. It wasn’t used or from Russels even though my gift from work was a gift certificate for that, my favorite bookstore. It’s new and from Chapters, and the book I desired today. Yes.
